Frank Allen Russum, US Army Air Forces
Park Plaza Apartments Larchmont
Frank Allen Russum was born on December 9, 1918, in Delaware and moved to the Park Plaza Apartments in Larchmont when he was 11 years old. Tragically, his father, Frank W. Russum, died at home of a heart attack when Frank was only 13. The family stayed in Larchmont and Frank went on to graduate from Mamaroneck High School in June, 1936, and joined the Navy in December, 1936. After serving on the USS Yorktown, Frank left the navy in December, 1940. On November 15, 1941, he married Phyllis Helene Crockett. After Pearl Harbor, on August 10, 1942, he enlisted in the Army Air Force and became an aviator and an officer. First, he served as an instructor but was then transferred to the Air Transport Command. He was stationed in Hawaii in August, 1945. His wife, Phyllis, and daughter, Sue Ann, joined him there. He died on December 13, 1946, as a result of injuries sustained in an airplane crash of his Piper Cub at Wheeler Field on his 28th birthday. At the time, his wife, Phyllis, was pregnant with their second daughter, Frances Allen Russum.
