When his ship, the U.S.S. L.S.T. No. 342 was blown in two in the Solomon Sea southeast of Rendova Island on July 18, 1943, O’Brien was listed as “Missing In Action”. Twelve months later, with no hope of recovery, he was declared officially dead.
